How have I progressed since my preliminary task?

Since my preliminary task I have learned a lot about editing and what level or organisation is needed to create a product like this, as well as the technology that is needed to create it. I have used a number of different technologies which I had never used before.

A comparison between my preliminary task and my main task products.

In my preliminary task I struggled with communicating with my group as they had far more experience with media language and technology than me. This was a problem as I would miss out on important information. To combat this I decided to move to a different group who I knew slightly better and they helped me and explained things clearly to me when I needed help. And to improve on communication we created a group chat to stay in touch outside of school as well as emailing important information to each other.

Our main task looked far better than my preliminary as it had better acting and dialogue, and in my preliminary task I think that the sound was not fitting to the video. I have learned especially in a  task like this that research and planning is vital to achieve good results from a product, time needs to be spent on researching you target audience to make sure that it has features or conventions that will make an enjoyable film. We learned that the planning of meeting up to film was vital to progress and we struggled initially, if given another attempt we would get ourselves organised a lot quicker now that we have learned how much it held us back. If I was to start the project again I would spend more time researching and analysing my data, as well as organising ourselves better and making the editing less rushed. This way we would be able to make a better product.

How did we attract our audience?

We attracted our audience by trying to recreate scenes that a 15-18 year old would recognise and relate with, an exam hall, and a rainy sports field. Both of these scenes would remind each member of the audience of different experiences, making each member of our audience see it differently. We chose to use scenes that focused mainly around school so that our audience will be able to relate, such as the exam scene. The scene in the product where the man is being harassed started out just like another scene but then we realised that it could be interpreted in different ways by different people which would make the experience more immersive. Due to our target audience having either been in mocks and preparing for their GCSE's or have completely finished their exams, they would all understand the stress of exams and would be able to relate to the feeling of stress and helplessness.

Who would be the audience for you media project?

Mentioned in a previous post, our initial age rating was a 12A because we thought that the film wouldn't contain any topics which could effect a younger audience.
When we presented our pitch to our peers it was instantly commented on, the whole group saying 12A would be far too young. After some research and suggestions from our peers we decided that 15 would be a reasonable rating, as it was the same rating as the film Se7en, which was a lot more graphic than our product.

In our surveys we asked different age groups about their preferences in thriller films. The results showed us that most of the people filling in the survey were 16-18 years old, which matched with our new certification perfectly, with well over half of our survey answers being over 15.

In our survey results we discovered that the majority of our audience was female, which was shocking as stereotypically males prefer thrillers or dark films, this could have been because of a small focus group or that more females were willing to do it than males. If we were to do the whole project again we would spend more time gathering information from surveys and analysing it.
